Designed by Michael Graves in 1985, the Red Bird whistle kettle has become one of the iconic design objects of the 20th century.
To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of this famous kettle, Graves redesigned the whistle, transforming the little bird into a fascinating, supernatural reptile, a creature both prehistoric, mythical, and futuristic. The choice of the dragon and its color
– refers to Chinese culture, which has made these beings symbols of strength and fortune. Made of 18/10 stainless steel and produced, like its famous predecessor, in the Crusinallo factory in Omegna, the "Tea Rex" kettle is available in two versions.
The first has a jade green whistle, a black knob, and a blue handle, with two small orange balls decorating its ends.
In the second version, the whistle is metalized by copper deposition and covered with a clear varnish; the knob and handle are black.
In this version, the small beads on the handle are blue. The whistle, handle, and knob are made of polyamide, and the magnetic steel base is also suitable for induction cookers. On the lid of the kettle, around the knob, the inscription "Tea Rex 9093 30th Anniversary" is engraved.
The inscription "Tea Rex" is presented in special packaging with graphics referring to the icon of the new whistle, not the original design.
The same graphics are placed on the packaging in which both whistles are sold.

The story of Graves' new kettle began like this: the bird-shaped whistle from the classic 9093 kettle turns out to be the most frequently stolen item in our production in stores around the world. Silvano, our marketing and communication manager, once told me: "Why don't we ask you to design a new one for the thirtieth anniversary of the 9093 model?". No sooner said than done. "In the life of a bird, thirty years is like the life of Methuselah!" Therefore, when Alberto Alessi asked me for a new whistle for the 30th anniversary of our kettle, I thought of a new evolution in its history. A whistle where our little bird could transform into a superhero: a reptile that is simultaneously prehistoric, mythical, and futuristic. I chose the dragon motif and the color jade green because of the rich cultural heritage of Chinese folklore, where the dragon symbolizes power and good fortune. Our dragon is friendly and certainly doesn't breathe fire, but maybe it breathes steam! It has a friendly smile on its face, it's easy to hear, and its wings are spread, making it easy to remove from the kettle when the water starts to boil. We hope our dragon will protect our kettle and your kitchen for many years"
