Philippe Starck’s iconic juicer is on public display here in its original version.
Sketched by the designer on a pizzeria pad during a holiday on the island of Capraia in Tuscany,
the Juicy Salif was described as “the most controversial juicer of the 20th century.”
A spider, a sea monster, an alien or a space rocket – this object has captivated the public’s imagination since its first appearance.

The fine line between what is possible and what is impossible. In the case of design, it marks the boundary between a project
that will be understood, loved, and desired by the public, and another that the public will not be able to understand, and therefore accept. This boundary is not clearly marked; it cannot be seen through market research.
It can only be guessed at, by carefully using our sensitivity and accepting the necessity of taking some risks.
Working on the border is the destiny of an Italian design factory like Alessi: we explore the limit of what is possible
and each time we try to cross it, or rather, to move it a little further. This is our concept of progress and our contribution to the evolution of consumer society.
Juicy Salif: one of Alessi’s most iconic objects is a perfect example of border practice: Starck’s “Juicy Salif” citrus juicer. This is a true example, because it is a project that
deliberately aimed to push the boundary, but at the same time did not lose contact with the audience! Thanks to the undoubted genius of its creator, but also to the care with which we developed the initial idea, it became and remains one of our bestsellers.
